Reason for update: Sudden death?

This plant had much more leaf damage from winter than the other one. However, all seemed great with the recovery and I put it in ground a few months ago. A new flush was coming in but one branch kind of dried out. Everything seemed normal until about a week ago. Suddenly all the leaves fell and within a short time, the main trunks were all black and with no leaves! Really a stunning deterioration in such a short time. I hope it will grow back from the roots. The tree in the same exact soil a few feet away is doing great.
