Planted in January 2021 on the west side of a concrete wall with direct afternoon sun. Died back to soil level the next 3 winters, but main trunk and branches survived the 4th.

This tree does not have any grafts on it.

(May 7, 2025) Update -- Did remarkably well over the winter considering it was unprotected other than the close placement to the house foundation. The branches closest to the house show essentially zero damage and are well into their spring flush, while the rest of the canopy lost the tender growth and suffered moderate leaf damage on the most exposed bits. Winter low of 22.4F.

(January 17, 2025) Pre-freeze update -- Looking good, other than that leaf curl this tree often shows over winter.

(November 15, 2024) Update -- Still very actively growing and dwarfs the previous maximum size.

(August 29, 2024) Update -- Had regained essentially its previous maximum size, with a bit more growing left in this season.

(July 23, 2024) Update -- Large new trunk has formed with branches already.

(April 20, 2024) Update -- Despite some living buds further up the trunk, the buds swelling at the base look more vigorous, so I'm expecting another new trunk.

(March 4, 2024) Update -- Damage has slowly crept inward since January, but still looks pretty green on the main trunk. Still might just regrow from the roots instead though

(January 17, 2024) Freeze update -- The main trunk looks mostly undamaged but all the branch tips are crispy.

(January 17, 2024) Freeze update -- I forgot to post this photo a few nights ago. This tree was surrounded by potted trees and loosely covered in fleece for the recent freeze, as shown here. The strand of string lights was partially under and partially over the fleece.

(November 2, 2023) Photo update -- Looks like only a few of the expanding leaves were really damaged, many of the new growth is still fine. But it does have the protection of our house foundation about a foot away!
